Drug Testing Tips

What does a ‘Negative Dilute’ drug test result mean? When the results come back as negative dilute it indicates that a urine sample has a greater concentration of water than that of a normal urine sample. The cause can be a deliberate act on the part of the donor by adding water directly to the specimen or by drinking large quantities of water prior to producing the specimen. It can also be accidental, especially during the warm summer months when people tend to drink more in an effort to stay hydrated. Employers often call and ask what to do when they receive this drug test result. It’s best if you have a policy that guides you so you aren’t left to decide while in the middle of hiring someone or dealing with an employee who just took a random or reasonable suspicion test. The most important thing is to be consistent. Some employers allow one additional test as long as it is taken within 24 or 48 hours.
To avoid accidental negative dilute test results, advise donors to schedule the test first thing in the morning, avoid caffeinated beverages and don’t drink more that 8 oz. of any fluid for a few hours prior to the test.
